Tomorrow when the War Began Chp Eight

Chapter Eight

How does Ellie feel about the lawn mower incident?
Ellie feels really disappointed and disgusted in herself that she could actually do that to people, that she didn’t even know.
How does she think the others will react to her story when she tells it?
She was afraid and stressed out because she thought they might judge or attack her.
How do they actually react? Why?
They are really caring towards Ellie and supportive because they know that, that was the only way they could survive.
Homer says, "This is war now, normal rules don't apply... They're the ones who tore up the rule book, not us"What does this say about his character? What do you think of the validity of his options?
It says that he doesn’t blame or judge her because they all have to do what they need to survive. Also we can tell that he plays fair.
Fi talks about the 'Shadows', during their reconnaissance. What are these shadows and what are the implications due to their existence?
The shadows are people but since Fi wasen’t able to see them fully she had called them shadows, she also knew that they weren’t soldiers they were people like Ellie and her group.
What pieces of evidence from the book inform the reader that this invasion wasn't entirely peaceful?
Maybe the fact that there was so many places that had been ruined, or the fact that some streets had a lot of blood on the roads and walls. Also because as soon as the soldiers heard something they would shoot.

Tomorrow when the War Began Chp Nine

Chapter Nine

Why, in Ellie's opinion, is Cobbler's Bay and Wirrawee so important to invaders?
It’a very important because Wirrawee is a very quiet place and she thinks that they are using it for that reason and using it as a way to work there way to the rest of the Countries. Cobbler’s Bay is important because you can barely see shops of other things in the ocean so she thinks that there could be a lot of ships from the invaders.
Corrie and Ellie reminisce about how innocent they were in high school and even a  few days ago? Why were they still innocent then? Why are they no longer innocent?
Corrie and Ellie think this because during High School they didn’t do anything bad, but since the invaders they have stolen, killed and done more things that they would never do.
Why does Homer think splitting up is a good idea?
He thinks that if they split up and at least half of them get caught then the other half will still be safe or still be able to firgure out what’s going on.
Why do you think the author added the few lines about an Australian jet flying overhead?
To show that is is Australia that has been involved in the war and that they are trying to fight back.
By blowing up Corrie's house, what does the invading force demonstrate to the teenagers?
It demonstrates to the teenagers that they will destroy anything that may be in there way.
Why do you think Corrie reacted the way she did?
She reacted this way because it was her home being destroyed right in front of her, it was the place she grew up in and made so many memories.

Tomorrow when the War Began Chp Seven

Chapter Seven

Which people in the group are starting to stand out as leaders, is this surprising? Why/why not?
Ellie and Hunter. I don't think it's that surprising because Ellie has always shown the group that she is more of a leader, but with Homer it is because he is goofy and seems like he would just muck around but he has really stepped up and changed.
Do you think that taking Kevin's dog flip to Corries house was a mistake?Explain thoughts
Yes I think it is because if any of the soldiers go looking in the houses they may realise that the dog has moved houses, so that lets the soldiers know people are out there for the dog to have been moved.
What does Lee mean when he says ´we might have to make some ugly choices?´
Lee means that they will have to make sacrifices during the time they are together, even if it causes harm.
How is Ellie´s image of Kevin changing in this chapter?
Ellie is beginning to see Kevin as more of someone who is useful and nice. Other than him being a sports jock and some arrogant person.
Is the decision to split into smaller groups and good decision? Give reasons
In some situations if you split into groups it can help and get things done quicker. If that was me I wouldn't of split into groups because of what has happened to Lee and Robyn.
Why is it that Ellie´s group decides to act ´illogical´ and survey the showgrounds together?
Ellie thinks that it's a good idea because if they are all together nobody is able to get lost.
Why does the idea of a female soldier surprise Ellie?
This could be because she thinks that to be a soldier you have to be male or maybe because she is only use to seeing male soldiers. So when she sees on it surprises her.
If your parents were captured in a situation like this, would they have been ´sensible´ or would they have been violent?
I think that my mum would have sensible and thought which would be the best way to handle the situation.
How is Ellie ´transformed´ once she steps out from behind a tree near the showgrounds?
When Ellie was behind the tree she was very thankful and affectionate of the tree because it was a very good way of hiding her and her friends. As soon as she steps away from the tree and something happens she starts panicking and getting stressed out with so much fear.
Ellie and Kevin´s quick-thinking allowed them to turn a ride-on lawnmower into a bomb. Was this moral behaviour? Did they do the right thing, or should they have surrendered themselves?
I really don't think that this is the best thing that they could of done. This is because they didn't know why the soldiers were there they just assumed that they were bad, but they could've just been protecting the people of Wirrawee.
Predict what you think has happened to Lee and Robyn.
I think that maybe they have gotten lost or caught up in some trouble.

Tomorrow when the War Began Chp Six

Chapter Six:

What is the first sign that something is wrong at Ellie's house?
That the dogs would normally bark when any car would pull up but there was no noise or movement at all.
Who is the first person to really realize that something is wrong?
Ellie
What is Ellie's reaction to this person's caution? Why do you think she reacts this way?
She instantly thinks that something bad has happened to the dogs. The reason I think she has reacted this way is because it just isn't how it normally is for her when she arrives home and just adds onto things that have already been strange.
How is the pace in this chapter different from chapter's before?
It's different because of how many things they get done and it's more organised in this chapter compared to the other chapters.
If you were in this situation, would you test the radio or not? Give reasons of your thinking.
I don't think I would in case something bad has happened and the radio could be used as a tracking device.
Do you think the way the teenagers reacted to the realisation that Austalia may have been invaded or at war was realistic? Why/why not?
I think in ways in could of been realistic like a war or another country invading them but not Aliens. It's because this is something that is likely to happen if things have turned out the way they have.
What possible reasons exist that could spark war or invasion of Australia?
That there was planes flying over them making loud noises and darkening the sky. Also how strange t is when they arrive home.

Tomorrow when the War Began Chp Five

Chapter Five:

What does Corrie's choice in career say about her character?
Corries choice in her career says that she is very caring and helpful towards others. It shows that she wants to help everyone in need and be able to support them.
The group's ability to avoid arguing with each other is rare- Do you think that there would have been more drama if you and your friends went bush for a week?
I don't think that if my friends and I went camping for a week that here would be any drama at all maybe just about where we are going to sleep but otherwise it would just be full of fun.
Why do you think Ellie and Lee feel uneasy just before there return to Wirrawee from the bush?
I think they feel uneasy because of the planes that flew of the while they were camping and the noise that came from them frightened them and they were worried something just wasn't  right.
What do you project will await the group back home, why do you think this?
I think that something could be wrong like the town has just turned into a ghost town or something, the reason I think this is because of reading how uneasy Ellie and Fi had felt about the planes flying over them and how odd it was.

Tomorrow when the War Began Chp Four

Chapter Four:

Do you think the way the handled the snake incident was appropriate? What could they have done differently?
I think it was appropriate and the most safest way they could have done it without getting hurt. Something they could have done differently though is maybe carry the sleeping bag outside and try to get the snake out with some food, so then the snake or them wouldn't be hurt.
Ellie claims that 'Hell' is only a label and that people label things all the time, often ignoring or overlooking certain labelled places or things. She then comes to the conclusion that 'Hell was people'. Is she right? What's your opinion, on labelling and Hell?
In certain ways she is right because a lot of people do jsut label things and come up with names without understanding or knowing anything about what the thing really is, like 'Hell'. I think maybe they named it Hell because to some people it just looked scary and something that terrified them.
What was especially peculiar about the planes that flew over Hell? 'Their -----, Their -----, their ----- frighting me.' Do these characteristics have any significance?
Something strange about the planes were the speed they were going and how dark they were. Ellie explains that it's not normal to see planes at hat speed and how they sound to be in Wirrawee so it gave her a feeling that something must be wrong. The give a strong meaning to the reader because it tells us that Ellie is feeling uncomfortable and worried about the planes and that she has a gut feeling something could be wrong.
Corrie and Kevin are the only couple in the group, but the trip was bound to bring friends closer. So why does Homer interest in Fi seem so odd to Ellie?
She finds it odd because of how different they are compared to each other, and how Homer presents himself as very annoying and a bit up himself. Another reasons is also because Home doesn't really pay attention to any girls in person or even bother with girls until now.
Fi brushes off the planes coming back from Commemoration Day. Why do you think the planes were flying over Wirrawee?
I think it could just be for the show or that something terrible must be happening.
Robyn claims there were dozens and dozens of planes flying over them. What is Lee's response? Is his suggestion reasonable?
Lee's response is that he is suggesting that it could be the start of World War Three. I think his suggestion is reasonable because that could be likely to happen because of how strange it is to see that many planes flying across the skies of Wirrawee.

Have you ever experienced an event that changed your life? In John
Avildsen’s ‘The Power of One’, a moment that changes the main character
PK’s life is when his beloved pet chicken ‘Mother Courage’ was strung up
and killed by his schoolmates. The character of PK is developed by this
incident because PK loses not only his chicken, but his symbol of courage
and friendship. He also develops the ability to not hold the actions of one
person against a whole race of people and to stand up to people who are
bigger than him.

When Pk’s chicken ‘Mother Courage’ is killed, PK loses his symbol of
courage, his only remaining family and his only friend at school.
In this scene, Borta the school bully tries to blame the English for the killing
of Africanas families in concentration camps in South Africa.
He claims that Hitler will punish the English for their actions, and that he will
punish the English too, starting with PK by killing his chicken. He has the
chicken strung up on a rope by its legs and kills it by firing a stone at its
chest using a slingshot. The chicken,
‘Mother Courage’ was given to PK by the witch doctor as a guide to help him
find his courage and overcome his bed wetting. Therefore, when the chicken
is killed, PK’s symbol of courage is killed with it and PK will now have to be
courageous on his own. PK had also lost his father and mother, so the
chicken was the only family he had left when he went back to boarding
school. In this way we see the character of PK change as he learns to
live without family and friends, and find his own source of courage. This
links to later in the film when his boxing coach Geel Piet is killed by a guard
and PK once again loses his friends and family.

{L}- In this way we see that PK has lost his symbol of courage, is only family and his friend.
(L)-In this way we see the character of PK change as he has to learn to live without family and
friends, and find his own source of courage.
{L}- In this way we see the character of PK change as he learns to live without family and friends,
and find his own source of courage. This links to later in the film when his boxing coach Geel Piet is
killed by a guard and PK once again loses his friends and family.

Another way the character of PK is developed as a result of the death of his
chicken is that he is able to forgive and not hold grudges against a whole
race of people for the actions of a few. At this point in the film, we see that the
Africana boys hold a grudge against all English because of the actions of
some in the past. When they killed his chicken, PK could follow their
example and hate all Africanas because of Borta and his friends, but he
chooses to embrace people of different cultures and only blame the person
for their actions not the race. The director includes this scene to let the
audience know that PK as an English man will face difficulties from the
Africanas throughout his life. This links to later in the film when PK wants to
date Maria, but her father will not allow it because PK is English and Maria is
an Africana. PK chooses to date her anyway, because he looks beyond a
person's race.

Conclusion- MIRROR- reflect the points of your essay.
The event that changed PK’s life was when his chicken ‘Mother Courage’
was killed by Borta and the Africana boys at his school. As a result of this
incident PK had to learn to find his courage from within, to make new family
and friends, to treat all peoples with respect regardless of their race, and to
stand up for the things he believes in. In this way, we can see the
importance of this scene in the overall film.

Tomorrow when the War Began Chp Three

Chapter Three:

Why does Robyn think they are the only to have ever gone into Hell?
Because he doesn't see why anybody would bother to go into Hell.
Why do you think the Valley is called Hell?
I think the Valley is called Hell because of how Overgrown the Valley is.
Why must the teenagers seem like visitors from hell to the wild things living in the clearing? How is this Ironic?
The reason they think this is because of how much noise they are making and how Kevin has a bad habit of breaking branches off of trees.
What picture of Kevin do we get to see in this Chapter?
We get to see the adventurous side of him, and see how he can act when he is out camping for awhile.
What does Ellie liken Fi to? Do you think this is a fair Assessment of her character?
Ellie likens Fi to trying Two minute noodles as she has never had them before because of how healthy her parents are. I think this is fair because it isn't someone that bad an extreme that can harm Ellie.
At times Ellie switches her narration from retelling the story commenting about her life in the present - Why do you think the author has chosen to write in this story?
To give the reader a feel and an idea on what happened during her life and how she is currently doing and feeling about it in the present.

Tomorrow when the War Began Chp Two

Chapter Two:

How did the group of teenagers ascend Tailors Stitch?
Using one of their parents Landrover.
What are two special events happening after the teenagers leave the bush?
The two special events are Commemoration Day and The Wirrawee Show - which are normally held on the same day.
How many days were they planning on staying?
They were planing on staying for five days.
How much food do you think is reasonable to bring, split between 7 teenagers?
Five days meal for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner and also maybe some snacks.
Who is the hermit and what is he supposed to have done?
Hermit is a story about a man who was supposed to have killed his wife and kids, and then he ran away to 'Hell' to hide and get away from the police.
Do you think the hermit will be significant in this story? Why/Why not?
I don't know he could be if he pops up during there camping trip or they just get frightened by something that they think is him.
Is their descent down Satan's Steps into hell dangerous? What are the dangers? How could they have made it safer? What would you have done?
Yes it is. A danger of them going down Satan's steps are how rocky and how far apart they are-They could slip and injure themselves. A way they could of made it safer is by putting some of the bags down and using that to help there steps down. If that was me I would've used blankets and chucked it down each steps in case I fell.
Predict what the bridge signifies
It signifies that someone else must have been where they have been because a bridge was built. It lets the teenagers know that they weren't the only ones who have gone into "Hell".
